Should we encourage sentiments in our society? Are sentiments good for the progress of the nation? Please give your opinions.
In my opinion, considering the present state of our indian society, sentiments are ruining the state of minds and affecting the people's attitude towards nation building. I hate the sentiments that yield nothing good. Under the influence of sentiments, people are turning into psychopaths and are taking extreme steps. Hatred, bigotry and violence are the outcome of too much sentiments. A person who is working towards the nation's progress is often deemed as impetuous renegade in our society.
The following are some sentiments that I hate and people under such sentiments will be subjected to my scorn and ridicule.

    3. Language sentiment: This is perhaps one of the worst, and its like a plague to our country.

    2. Religious sentiment: This absurd sentiment is responsible for millions of deaths throughout the history of mankind. This shallow infatuation is a nemesis for our country's unity. We better get rid of this as soon as possible.

    1. Family sentiment: This perhaps deserves to in the top of my hated sentiments list. Most of our people so attached to the family, that they forget all other obligations in the pretext of filial obligations. I have been observing most our people sacrificing, or rather skipping, responsibilities because of this. I am not encouraging to give up your family, but it shouldn't be in the way of your dreams and your obligations to this great country. My father is the only example I can give. He disobeyed my grandparents at some stage and followed his heart. In this process he earned the wrath of my relatives. But now, he is only person in our entire family/clan to be high in terms of status and income. He still loves his parents to the core and helps them financially even today. So, moral of the story is that we have to regulate (not suppress) our family sentiments. Seriously, this sentiment is responsible for the selfish and bland attitude of our people towards our nation.

yes for sure sentiments are a crap when it comes to mutual dependency as u quoted about our country i would like to elucidate..INDIA is country of RAMA who obeys his father order inspite of anything comes to heart..! our history itself have tank full of sentiments ..i dont understand how makes a person good by blindly obeying orders of a father..! whether its good or bad..! and people in here are more inclined towards devoting to krishna than understanding what was explained in GEETA..! i can see the sentiments at every foot step..! my parents grow me up and expect a lot from me .. not only my parents but almost all parents..! when expectancy raises sentiments take berth ..! one day i told to my parents please stop expecting from me being attached to me ..! it doesn't mean that i am leaving them ..! relation should make a sense in life but not to create non sense and disturbance..! as i see now a days love stories.. ending up sentimental..! sometimes i can see myself behaving soo being a part of this very country ... but when there are no forces around me i am what i am which i wanted to be..!

All those days of kings ruling are gone. We are in the 21st century. And we need to evolve accordingly. No doubt that we should maintain our traditions but not at the cost of our country's progress. I can cite several examples of my friends.
You displaying only your optimistic views regarding sentiments. It is not necessarily universal that sentiments are always good. As I said, anything too much is too bad - let it be even a good quality. Regarding family sentiments, are you properly reading what I've written? I don't think so. If you carefully try to make sense of what I am saying, then you can appreciate. I had seen many cases in which people give up their motives and cues for the sake of their family. Gandhiji is the father of our nation, but he hasn't been a father to his own family. When my father asks students to dedicate their lives for research, no body comes forward, they all have a reason - taking care of family. Had my father done the same thing, believe me or not, he would have been working for a southern railways, where my grand father was working and not a renowned professor on signal and image processing. Also, I called for sai charan when I was in india, to start a freelance programming initiative. He initially committed but later, there was no answer. Hence I did all programming projects on my own. Its useless to even think about team work for a common cause when it comes to indian. We all talk big - blah blah blah blah....... but when it comes to actual implementation, we all tend to shy away, giving some damn family reason. Why don't you try an experiment? Start a group, solely dedicated to bring unity in india. Imagine that there is an job offer from TCS. What will you guys do? How many guys will join this group to help india? No one.
Why are the americans successful in every field, because they follow their heart and not heir family. As, I see these people here, everybody is independent from their family. They live all by themselves, cook on their own, wash their own clothes and manage manage everything on their own. When there are some holidays, they go and meet their friends and families. My friend during the spring break of one week, went all the way to san diego, to meet her family. We all had a wrong perception that these guys don't care for their families. It is our wrong perception as a disguise to our evading attitude on work or duty. Come one guys. Please realize this.

Hey dude. Actually, this was an old post by me in facebook. Actually nikesh was arguing that sentiments are required. I replied many times and my replies contained some important points that I felt are meant to be conveyed. So I simply pasted my responses without too much reading. I am sorry. I was kind of busy, and my intention was to convey the right message. Next time I will give answers appropriately without creating any animosity. Thanks for understanding me dude. Rolling Eyes
